There’s a wild night of funky brass and beats at the CIC in Taunton, when one of the country’s leading street bands plays the Taunton venue. Street funk, circus, carnival, and jazz combine in Tongues of Fire’s musical storm of brass, reeds and percussion. This six piece band make a joyful noise for dreaming, dancing and celebration, a rich, wild and unique sound, with contemporary New Orleans grooves, Ska, funk, Balkan tunes and more – all played with fire and verve. They play the Stockton International Riverside Festival the following weekend where they will lead a big street band celebration. The band have played all over the UK, Eire and in Europe.
“Wicked big band jazz from the excellent Nanny Tango label. A seven piece brass band dropping dance floor devastating marching tunes and each single comes with an illustrated 8 page manifesto of the band.”
Fatcity Records
The band is driven by an awesome drum section of Emma Holbrook and Jo Meikle with the mighty Tom Francombe on sousaphone, all musicians with their roots in Taunton. Stuart Henderson is one of the UK’s leading jazz players, former lead trumpet for the Scots Guards. Joe Porter is Taunton’s own trumpet legend and special guest is tenor sax player Simon Prince, coming down from Manchester.
Tongues are led by veteran street musician Tim Hill, another local player. Tim is festival director of the Sound of the Streets, who recently created the wonderful festival day in Taunton and run education projects for children and young people.
The band draws on traditions of funky marching bands and village, chapel and circus bands and play in the landscape, on the street, on stages and lead parades and processions.
“Referencing the collective shamanic voodoo of Sun Ra and Albert Ayler’s mystical shrieks and shronks, they fire up an unholy modal roustabout of a party. Blindingly good. 5/5”
