The Sound of the Streets Festival 2025

Sunday 13th July

Taunton experienced the vibrant world of street bands and carnival music during this festival of musical joy in the centre of Taunton. It was a day of Dancing in the Streets’ with London’s amazing Kinetika Bloco, local bands and young musicians. Everything from ancient horns to drum groups, street bands, folk fiddle and solo singers. And everyone could join in, with the chance to create live art, sing and play as well as dance. As well as a stage in the centre of town, there was music and workshops in the Museum of Somerset and Castle Green. And there was plenty to eat and drink at the museum café and especially at the wonderful Taunton Independent market on Castle Green, where there was more music.

There were performances by the Kerala drum group Taunton Beats, The Exeter Street Band, wonderful local singer DeJa Vu, The Sound of the Streets own big band and the MAD dance Academy. There was also a chance to see The Sound of the Streets youth bands, The Sound Invaders, Silver Sounds and The Big Friendly Street Band from Devon.

There was the chance to create live art in a collaborations with Go Create Taunton, making live ‘action art’ along with the music. In the Museum courtyard, you could hear traditional music and ancient horns (the Serpent and Carnyx) with Phil Humphries and folk fiddler Colin Thompson.
