Are you a young brass, wind, or drum player looking for a new musical adventure? Join The Sound of the Streets for a vibrant and inspiring Street Band Workshop!

This free event is perfect for musicians under 19 years old, with a skill level of Grade 3 or above. The workshop is for all young musicians from Guildhall Young Artists Taunton and any other young musicians. This is your chance to discover the electrifying sounds of street band music!

 

What to Expect

Street bands are a global phenomenon, bringing life and energy to celebrations from New Orleans to South Africa, Delhi to the Balkans. In this workshop, you will:

  • Develop your musical skills, rhythmic sense, and confidence.
  • Learn to play by ear and enhance your ensemble performance.
  • Experiment with improvisation in a supportive and fun environment.

The session is led by three leading street band musicians and educators who will guide you through a mix of playing by ear and sheet music, adapting to your comfort level.

 

Meet the Workshop Leaders

  • Emma Holbrook (Drums): A top rock and funk drummer.
  • Tom Francombe (Brass): Nationally renowned sousaphone player and Head of Brass at John Packer Ltd.
  • Tim Hill (Saxophone): A seasoned street band musician and founder of the renowned street band, Tongues of Fire.

 

About The Sound of the Streets

The Sound of the Streets, a charity based in Somerset that promotes street bands and celebratory sound, creates free festivals and events and runs education projects and bands for children and young people, especially to inspire and support them playing music.

They run The Sound Invaders, a youth street band at The Castle School, meeting Wednesdays at 6 PM, and even host a primary school band in Stoke St. Gregory. The organisation is running their fourth festival in July.
