A burst of colour and music is set to energise the streets of Taunton as the vibrant new Sound of the Streets Carnival Band makes its debut at the Taunton Together Festival on September 28th. The band will parade down the High Street at 12 noon, bringing an eclectic mix of carnival tunes from around the world to the heart of the town.
Featuring an exciting combination of reeds, brass, drums, and percussion, the Sound of the Streets Carnival Band promises a performance filled with rhythm, melody, and infectious energy. The ensemble will showcase a fusion of global carnival music traditions, drawing inspiration from New Orleans, Trinidad, and Brazil, while also incorporating classic tunes from The Beatles, popular hits, and even pieces linked to Somerset’s musical heritage. Their unique sound is further enriched by influences from Swiss music culture.
The band, comprised of a dynamic mix of local professional musicians, music teachers, amateurs, and youth players, represents the spirit of community and creativity. Performers hail from local groups like The Little Big Horns, The Sound Invaders, and The Big Noise, forming a diverse musical collective that is firmly rooted in Somerset.
The creation of this vibrant new band is part of a larger initiative by The Sound of the Streets, a charity dedicated to fostering a love of music through festivals, parades, concerts, education projects, and workshops. Their mission includes nurturing young talent by offering resources, podcasts, and films that delve into the rich history and traditions of outdoor music. With two youth bands already thriving under their guidance, the charity continues to inspire the next generation of musicians to take up wind, brass, and percussion instruments.
In addition to the carnival band, The Sound of the Streets is launching an exciting new youth drumming project called Beats on the Streets. Open to all young people in Taunton, these drumming workshops will kick off in October, taking place every Sunday at noon at the Arts Hub, Flook House. The project aims to engage and inspire young drummers, providing them with a platform to learn and perform.
This initiative has been made possible thanks to generous funding from Taunton Town Council, whose support ensures that both the carnival band and drumming workshops can bring the joy of music to the local community.
